Gerontoplasts develop from chloroplasts and aggregate with the pycnotic mitochondria and the cell nucleus in the senescent cells (organelle aggregation). The gerontoplasts contain only a few, unstacked thylakoid membranes but a large number of carotinoid-containing plastoglobuli, which after the degration of chlorophyll presumably assume the light protection of the cells. The thylakoid membranes of the gerontoplasts were isolated by means of a flotation method. Their polypeptide composition is characterized by a high proportion of light-harvesting complex. Evidence of relatively high photochemical activity shows that functional thylakoid membranes are present in the premortal senescence state of leaves and this suggests that there is functional compartmentation of the hydrolytic processes in this stage of the leaves' development.

متن کاملPhycocyanin, cyanobacterial antioxidant: structure, function and applications
Phycobilins, open-chain tetrapyrrole pigment molecules, serve as accessory photosynthetic light-harvesting pigments in red algae and cyanobacteria. Phycobilin pigments are covalently linked with proteins and formed phycobiliproteins are organized into large macromolecular complexes called phycobilisomes on the top of the thylakoid membranes. In deep water, only green light is available, thus ph...

This study was performed to investigate the effect of storage conditions on seed germination performance of faba bean (cv. Shami). For this purpose, a three factors factorial experiment was conducted in laboratory of Seed Science and Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Yasouj University, in 2013-2014, based on CRD design with five replications. The experimental factors were storage temperature...
متن کاملLocalization of Cytochrome b-559 in the Chloroplast Thylakoid Membranes in Spinach.
Cytochrome b-559 was purified from spinach leaves and antibodies were made against it in rabbit. Using affinity-purified, monospecific antibodies, we have found that cytochrome b-559, which is closely associated with the primary photochemical activity of photosystem II, is localized exclusively in the grana thylakoids.

Envelope-free chloroplasts were imaged in situ by contact and tapping mode scanning force microscopy at a lateral resolution of 3-5 nm and vertical resolution of approximately 0.3 nm. The images of the intact thylakoids revealed detailed structural features of their surface, including individual protein complexes over stroma, grana margin and grana-end membrane domains. Structural and immunogol...
